The race: Texas 70.3 was an easy choice. It was within driving distance of my girlfriends place in Dallas, so it would be a good opportunity for her to watch me race and understand part of the reason why I wear lycra 20hours a week. This was my opening US race of the season. Time to blow out the cobwebs from the Australian summer
The players: James Seear (AUS), Lionel Sanders (CAN), Chris McDonald (AUS), Richie Cunningham (AUS), Brandon March (USA), Leon Griffin (AUS), Brent McMahon (CAN).
The outcome: To be fair, I battled all day. I didnt have a great swim, but I knew Richie was the man to watch and I was on his feet throughout the swim. We exited the water with a fair amount of firepower including Griffin, who promptly rode away from us. The course is a straight out and back, perfect if you struggle with cornering on a bike. We averaged just under 50km for the first hour, being assisted by a very gusty tail wind. The race stayed together on the way out. On the way back I got ejected from the group as we struggled into the wind. I felt like I was towing the grand piano, sink and refrigerator. I closed out the run with a solid 1:14 for 7th. Congrats to Richie and Brandon who duelled fiercely upfront.
